Elizabethtown, NC: Jones Lake Campground

The park surrounds two of the many mysterious bay lakes found in eastern North Carolina, though access to the remote Salters Lake is by permit only. Canoes, kayaks and motorized craft of 10 horsepower or less are welcome, and canoes and paddleboats can be rented in summer months. A visitor center and exhibit hall introduce visitors to the ecology of the bay lakes, to be further experienced on a four-mile loop trail through bay thickets and pond cypress stands draped with Spanish moss.

Goldsboro, NC: Cliffs of the Neuse Campground

The site of Cliffs of the Neuse State Park, with impressive cliffs overlooking the Neuse River, has been a landmark for centuries. Five hiking trails explore the riverside habitats and their mature forests and lead to some quiet fishing spots along the waterway. Located under tall pines and hardwoods, each of the 40 campsites is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring and lantern poles. Two of these sites only allow double occupancy. Campsites are large and can accommodate at least 25 feet of camper length, and many times more. Bunkhouse cabins are rustic, but provide shelter from the elements. Hikers, trail runners, bicyclists and equestrians cherish the extensive network of hiking and multi-use trails at William B. Umstead State Park. Trailheads on both sides of the park—accessible from Interstate 40 and US 70—surround three manmade lakes. The largest is Big Lake, offering canoe and rowboat rentals. Fishing is welcome at all the lakes and connecting tributaries. At both access areas, picnic grounds surround shelters with fireplaces that can be reserved. For organizations and nonprofit groups, primitive group campsites are available as well as two group camps with cabins, mess halls, and washhouses. Historic Maple Hill Lodge can be reserved for overnight group gatherings. A tent campground is open during summer months.
